When operating aerial work platforms, it is crucial to adhere to safety regulations, especially when exiting a raised platform. This blog post emphasizes important considerations and offers practical tips.

General prohibition

Please remember the following: It is generally not allowed to climb out of the working platform of an aerial work platform onto adjacent components. The aerial work platform is designed as a workplace and not as a climbing aid, elevator, or crane. The manufacturers only allow leaving the working platform in its basic position as stated in their operating instructions. This means that the intended exit must be used.

Exceptions and risk assessment

In certain situations, it may be necessary to exit the elevator when it is raised for short-term assembly operations. This is allowed only in exceptional circumstances when using other access methods poses a higher risk of falling. Prior to permitting this, a risk assessment must be conducted to demonstrate the technical impossibility or higher danger of other access methods, such as using a stair tower in combination with scaffolding.

Measures for safe egress

Please ensure the following device-related measures are met:

  • The working area should be utilized up to a maximum of 75% in terms of working height and lateral reach.
  • The equipment must have sufficient load capacity to accommodate at least two people and their payload.
  • Anchorage devices for personal protective equipment (PPE) against falls from a height must be available.
  • If possible, use a working platform with a door.

Organizational measures:

  • Conducting a special, written risk assessment.
  • Drafting of operating instructions for disembarking.
  • Selecting a suitable lanyard for the exit (e.g. Y lanyard in accordance with EN 354).
  • A second person remains in the work platform and monitors the work.
  • A specific instruction of the authorized persons for this situation.

Behavior-oriented measures:

  • The access platform should not be moved when entering or exiting.
  • Avoid creating additional forces by jumping on and off the platform.
  • Maintain a safe distance from solid objects nearby.
  • Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent falls from a height.
  • Properly cordon off the work area for safety.

Example of an exit and entry process:

  1. A person leaving the work platform should secure themselves to an anchorage device outside the workman basket.
  2. After securing themselves, the person should detach from the work platform at the anchor point.
  3. Once detached, the person can proceed to complete the work while the second person remains in the work platform.
  4. After completing the work, the person should climb back into the work platform at the same point.

Proper preparation and training is essential

Exiting the platform while it is raised involves considerable risks and should only be carried out in exceptional cases and in strict compliance with all safety measures. A thorough risk assessment and compliance with all prescribed measures are essential to ensure the safety of workers.

With the right preparation and training, many risks can be minimized so that work at height can be carried out safely and efficiently. Always stay informed and pay attention to the safety instructions in the operating manuals and the applicable regulations.
